A Healthy Soundscape -Toby Collett on why it is essential to care for the wellbeing of birds

Visitors to RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) Frampton Marsh Reserve are immersed in a rich soundscape of birdsong, calling, and behavioral interaction against dramatic coastal scenery. But to those who visit the reserve, Warden Toby Collett issues a simple challenge: Drive just 10 minutes from the reserve, stop the car, and listen.

I issue this challenge to visitors so that they can better understand what a difference being within the reserve makes,” says Collett, who reminds the public that it’s essential to care for the wellbeing of birds and other wildlife beyond the reserve’s borders as well.

As reserve managers, we don’t want to be victims of our own success,” warns Collett in reference to the relative abundance of birdlife within the reserve and the potential risk that the public may take the overall protection of birds for granted.

According to Collett, people already care about birds, even if they aren’t aware as such. For instance, the spring arrival of swallows or a cuckoo can be a powerful reminder. So too can taking the time to stop and listen.

“Part of our mission here is to help people on that journey to caring about birds and the habitats they live in,” says Collett. “We want the public to join in the effort and to make a difference.”
