Austria’s earliest spring

April 01 2016 by St. Martins Therme | Category: Partner

Birdsong and mating Lapwings everywhere, Graylag Geese that already brood eggs, the first young hares and even numerous spring blooms already.

While the skiing season is still open in other parts of Austria, spring has already sprung in the Seewinkel region. The European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus) are one sign for this, which were sighted after the long hibernation already on 20 February - the earliest in a long time - and as of now will be a frequent and popular part of our safaris.

The large number of Greylag Geese (Anser anser) is also impressive, which travel in pairs along meadows, wet areas, and areas adjoining lakes in order to start brooding soon, while the first pairs presumably already started brooding at the end of February.

Yet what is most eye-catching at the moment are the numerous types of ducks, which are either taking a break here on their way north or are returning to their brooding grounds in Seewinkel to eagerly look for a brooding partner for the coming season. The drakes of the Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina), Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata), or the Common Teal (Anas crecca), for example, currently offer the most beautiful blaze of colors.

But many winter guests are also still in the area, for example Hen Harriers (Circus cyaneus), Goosanders (Mergus merganser) or Great Grey Shrikes (Lanius excubitor).

Austria's earliest spring is also slowly but surely noticeable with its beginning colorfulness. Snowdrops (Galanthus) or even the first crocuses (Crocus) are growing at suitable locations - usually near small patches of trees - and numerous yellow flowering Lesser Celandines (Vicaria verna) are noticeable along meadows and pastures.

The biodiversity of birds and flora will increase over the next few weeks, which is why great safari tours are guaranteed for the spring.
